Turning Grapes

by David Pollack

/

about

I wrote this song in the heat of quarantine after watching an episode of Netflix's Dirty Money about Jared Kushner. I had recently reread Grapes Of Wrath and I wanted to write a song depicting the struggle of the "2020 Grapes Of Wrath" relating to the current situation of the pandemic. This song was recorded in my room in Portland OR with audio stems stretching across the country with Ian Koeller on Drums in Vermont, Will Leet on Organ in Brooklyn NY and Karyn Ann on Back Up Vocals from her room in Portland OR.The making of this track made me appreciate that a great record can still be made without all the musicians in the same room! Physically distanced but emotionally together stronger than ever!

lyrics

Turning Grapes
By David Pollack

What a year it’s been this week
They closed the doors so that the sickness barley speaks
What a time to be alive.
We’e seen the optimist they’re squeezing grapes of wrath into wine.

We’re told this is the big one
We’re told this is the right time to stay inside.
We’re coughing out the hard ache
We’re breathing cold hard cash in to stay alive

Wake up one day loose the next.
Yes someone’s always gaining on the weakest capitalists.
Invest in skulls and let the algorithms do the rest
It’s only Mother Nature who knows the answers to the test.

We’re told this is the big one
We’re scolded to keep our bodies from the rest.
We’re heaving coffins selling out
If you heat up cash it only starts a fire
A fire

A winters rain falls into spring
But when the coffees cold an endless sleep returns your wings

We’re told this is the big one
Pack your bags clean out the stores enjoy the ride
We pay the price to be alone till we go bankrupt and step into the fire
The fire
